There are a lot of important decisions that we will make in our lifetimes. Such as where to go to school, who to marry, where to live, what our career will be, etc. I want to tell you about the single most important decision that we will ever make.
Making the decision to believe in Jesus Christ and that He died on the cross for you and your sins is that decision.
For as long as I can remember, my family and I went to church every Sunday to a church where the pastor was a family friend in Black Forest, just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado. I remember doing the Sunday school thing, reading Bible stories and making cool little crafts, but that is all it was for me until I was six years old.
As a kid, I had a picture hanging on my wall that was a painting of Jesus knocking on a door with vines growing all around. Some of you probably have seen the painting yourselves. I remember my mom telling me that Jesus was knocking on the door to my heart and I all had to do was open the door and let Him come in!
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20
I had called my brother and sister bad names and had taken things that were not mine. I realized that I was a sinner and that there was nothing I could do by myself to overcome that, and that I did need a Savior to save me from eternal death.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Even though I was young, I realized that even if I did just one little thing wrong, I deserved to be punished for it. I realized that those things I had done wrong (sins) made me a sinner and that by sinning I was having an independent and rebellious attitude towards God.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that He will not hear.” Isaiah 59:2
Our sin separates us from God both physically and spiritually. If we are separated from God in this life because of sin, we will be separated from God forever after we die. This is called eternal death or hell and is the final punishment for sin.
I found out that there was no amount of good works I could do to overcome that death penalty. Jesus Christ’s death on the cross was the only solution for all my sins!
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
My mom told me that all I needed to do was to pray and confess my sins and ask Jesus Christ to come into my life.
“That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
So I prayed and I told Jesus I was a sinner and that I needed Him. I told Him that I wanted to believe in Him and believe that He died on the cross for my sins. I also told Him that I wanted to put my trust in Him as the only solution to my sins.
I made that decision at a very early stage in my life, but I believe it was and is the most important decision that I have made or will ever make.
After I prayed, I was so thankful! God sent His Son to die on the cross for my sins and there is absolutely nothing I can do to change that. It is an amazing gift that God freely offers to everyone. All you have to do is accept it.
You might be wondering how this amazing gift could ever be free? Well, Jesus died on the cross as a willing substitute for our sins. He suffered the punishment of death that we deserve. Because of His death and resurrection, God now offers you and I eternal life as a free gift! All I had to do was BELIEVE in Jesus Christ and I could receive that gift!
If you have never made this decision and have never prayed to receive Christ, I would encourage you to take a serious look at these verses. Choose to make the most important decision you will ever make and pray today and accept Jesus Christ’s free gift of forgiveness and eternal life!
“Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
Not a day goes by where I am not thankful for what Jesus did on the cross for me. I am who I am today because of this decision. Jesus forgave all of my sins; He gives me a deep peace and joy about life, eternal life in HEAVEN and so much more! He is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
